December 19-25, 2010

Sister Nelson in the German town of Fredricksburg, Texas

Dear Loved Ones,

We are grateful for this season of the year as we celebrate the birth of our Savior. I suppose being on a mission helps one to focus more on the true meaning of Christmas where we are not so involved in all of the commotion of preparations etc. However there are many traditions of the Christmas season that we miss such as the family gatherings and delight of children.

Generally it has been a slower week at the Employment Center as far as people coming in needing assistance. There have been several that have come in to report that they have found a job (such as the attorney whom we have mentioned in the past couple of weeks), we have cheered for them and been excited with them at this good news. However there have also been a couple of new candidates that have come in having just lost their jobs this week. It seems to happen during this time at the end of the year but it sure is hard on them. It’s also a very busy time at the store house, if you lose your parking spot you may have to circle for a while to find a new one. We have also had quite a few volunteers come in this week. We have had them assist in putting companies and jobs on to the web site.

We were only open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Monday and Tuesday were rather slow days, mostly assisting the volunteers so we were told on Wednesday if it was a slow day we could close up shop a few hours early. However Wednesday afternoon it got very busy and we were good to close by 5:00. I guess everyone realized it was their last chance at getting in this week. It was of course fine, it didn’t hurt us a bit.

Monday evening we took Sister Gloria Lyle out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant, they have a lot of good ones around here. Afterwards we drove out to Grand Prairie and drove through the Prairie Lights display. She lives out near there in Mansfield. We enjoyed a nice evening with her.

Tuesday Jack helped a lady create her resume, Wednesday morning she called in and said she had an interview that very afternoon, she was so excited and we were excited with her. It was the first interview that she had been able to get in quite sometime. We always say the purpose of the resume is to get you an interview, so they did GOOD!!

Thursday morning we left for Fredricksburg, TX. This is the town that was settled by the Germans that we had gone to last Spring. Their historic district was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. We enjoyed window shopping and seeing all the decorations.

On our drive there were stopped President LB Johnson’s ranch and cemetery. We were also able to locate Luckenbach, Texas, no easy feat. All the Willie Nelson fans out there would appreciate a visit to this little town. AND I mean little, population is 3, actually I just read that there was a recent death and so now the population is 2!

Friday morning we left Fredricksburg and traveled over to College Station to the Texas A & M University and visited the George H. W. Bush Presidential library. We both enjoyed this visit, of course this is exactly the kind of stuff that Jack loves. It seems like he was a very good president, stating that faith, family and friends were at the heart of a good life.

This has been an unusual weather week. Tuesday the high was 87 degrees. We noticed the young Elders were back in their short sleeve shirts. However yesterday and today were very cold, the coldest yet this year, the highs only in the low 40’s. Friday on our trip back to Dallas we got in a pretty good rain storm for a couple of hours. It seems the rain storm that had been drenching the West for several days finally made it to us. It passed on rather quickly however.

Friday evening we were invited over to the Mark Morell’s home for Christmas Eve. It was so nice to be with a family. We enjoyed some yummy treats, dinner and the Christmas story and thoughts. On Christmas day we went to Charlie and Carla Morell’s home where all of their children and grandchildren gathered for a delicious turkey dinner.

Today Carla Morell asked our group of Charlie, Duane & Alaina Bryner and myself to play the prelude music and a special musical number in the Plano 6th Ward. We played some Christmas music, it was things we had played together before so it was easy to pull together.

We are so grateful for all of you. We are so blessed to have a wonderful family and friends who support us and support each other. I have been reading President Monson’s biography, the other night I read a paragraph of what he taught at a mission presidents’ seminar. He uses a scripture to reassure missionaries: “Your families are well; they are in mine hands, and I will do with them as seemeth me good; for in me there is all power.” We continue to put our faith, trust and hope in the Lord as we serve him and the people here in Texas.

May His blessings be with us all this week,

Both performances of the Messiah was sold out weeks ago. It seems many of the families has made this Messiah Sing a Holiday tradition for their family.Sister Nelson was privileged to lead #52 "If God be for US"
It was such an experience to see her up their conducting, I do believe excellence seeks out its own!

Sister Nelson reviewing resume's

19 December 2010

Dear Family,

Another week has flown by so quickly. We are enjoying the sights and thoughts of the Christmas Season here in Texas. We have a little 1 foot fake tree with lights that helps us keep in the spirit of the season.

This past Monday we had the annual Dallas, Texas Mission Senior Missionary Couples Training/Conference. It began at 2:00 in the afternoon over at the Mission home. It was good to meet with President & Sister Smith and the two counselors in the mission presidency. They are all great people. We shared favorite memories of Christmas and Christmas traditions, heard thoughts from the Mission Presidency and Sister Smith. We sang some Christmas hymns and had a white elephant gift exchange also. We really enjoyed the time together. We are down in numbers from last year by about half, they say they are having a harder time getting Sr. missionaries right now.

We ended the evening by going over to Salt Grass for dinner. It is a very yummy ‘Texas’ restaurant. The next morning we met at the Dallas Temple and went through a session. A very good place to be, such a wonderful spirit always to be found in His holy house.

One thing great about being a missionary is getting a Christmas card from the First Presidency.

We had our piano class this week. Several new people came this week; you just never know what will happen. Sister Hernandez played the postlude music in Relief Society last week. She inspired 3 more people to come after listening to her. She is really blossoming right now, I’m so proud of her. She helped the young women students while I worked with the 3 new students who came at that time. At the end of our time I asked her if she would play one of the Christmas hymns she’s been working on while we all sang. She agreed and did well and then we all clapped and cheered for her, it was great.

From the Employment Center news – now that we don’t have Nathan coming in 6 hours a week posting jobs for us we have to work a little harder at that aspect of the work we do. We are doing a pretty good job of it. Sister Paige still comes in on Tuesdays and posts the Stake Jobs so that really helps. She has been doing this service for many years.

We had a tough situation when a family of seven, parents and 5 young children came in needing help. They had recently left Alaska and went to California; things didn’t work out there so after a few days they went to Utah. Things didn’t work out for them either so someone helped finance their trip to Texas. All they had was their van and a few belongings. We helped what we could and were able to get in touch with the transient Bishop who was able to help them get some food from the storehouse and get them a place to stay. Tough times for them.

There are still some coming in that have been our regulars for a couple of months now, plus a few new ones. I have gotten several responses to welcome emails I have sent out. They have wanted their resume reviewed, so I’ve gone over it and then sent them a reply with suggestions. (Who would think!, it still seems odd.)

Our Thursday P-day was a relaxed one. Jack enjoyed the temple so much on Monday that he went back and did another session. I stayed at the apartment and did some catching up on things and did some practicing on the recorder. (I hope our neighbors don’t mind!) We went to dinner with Will & Ellie Boeswetter that evening.

I was asked to play the flute part for one of the Christmas selections, a Soprano/Alto duet, in the Dallas 6th Ward today. It turned out quite interesting. They practiced one time this week but I was not able to practice at that time so it was decided to practice at 8:00 this morning before choir. At 8:30 one of the young ladies showed up. It was her first time singing alone and she was not especially comfortable with her part so I spent the time playing the piano and helping her with her part. We thought we were going to practice before church with the accompanist, however when she came she had a different practice to be to. Soooo, I played it for the first time with them in Sacrament Meeting. It wasn’t a very difficult part and it all went smoothly. The singers got off at a key change but they were able to recover and get back in.

Charlie Morell has an orchestra group that plays together; they practice a couple of times a month. They invited me to play the recorder with them this year for the Messiah. I was of course very happy to accept the invitation. I created a part from the flute and oboe parts. I borrowed a CD and played along whenever I could sneak in a few minutes. They had a couple of Saturday rehearsals with the orchestra and soloists. Mary Poulter is the director and brings it all together beautifully. She lives in Denton and has contact with the music students at UNT. Most of the soloists are students there or have been her students previously and have returned for the holidays. One is a Bishop from the Denton Stake that we have met and worked with previously.

Mary sings one of the solos, they usually have someone lead the orchestra for that one number but they are out of town this year so I will be leading it. The duet for Alto and Tenor – ‘Oh Death, Where is Thy Sting,’ is sung by a husband and wife team. The wife has been battling cancer, she was finished up her treatments several weeks ago and was confident that she would be strong enough to do it. We had a practice about a month ago where she was able to come and practice. However, last week she had some complications and died. Her funeral was just a couple of days ago. I assumed they would have to cancel that number or find someone else to sing it but they decided to have in performed in memorial to her. They asked me if I would play the recorder for the alto part and Alaina Bryner will play the tenor part on her violin.

This is a ‘Sing A-long Messiah’ setting. It is held at the Artisan Theater in Hurst. Last year we went and it was fun to be able to ‘sing along’ with them. It is a theater in the round and seats several hundred people. There is no charge to attend but you need to get tickets to reserve your spot. It will be performed twice, at 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Tickets for both times have been sold out for several weeks, so there will be a full house. Well I think that is enough of that, it’s making me nervous thinking about it and I don’t want to do that. Possibly there will be pictures to follow on the blog.

This is a more difficult time of year to be away from home and our dear loved ones. But we try to keep our hearts and minds on our service and the new opportunities that we are having here. Truly we learn more about faith and hope as we meet with others who are in struggling circumstances and as we move forward. We are grateful for our Savior, for his birth, which means so much because of his life – and death. Our testimonies are strengthened as we continue to serve. We hope you have a blessed week and that we all feel of the true meaning of Christmas in our hearts this season.

Grapevine the Christmas Capital of Texas

12 December 2010

Hello Family and Loved Ones,

We hope you have had a pleasant week. The work is moving along here. We’ve had some people get jobs, but I’m afraid others have lost ones. This time of year has reflections of last year at this time. There are those companies that rather than give Christmas bonuses give them the letter that their job is terminated. Such a hard time of year to go through that, well I don’t know if there is a better of year, not if it happens to you for sure.

Jack was still sick on Monday and Tuesday but fortunately by Wednesday he was doing better. It was good to see some life back in him.

There was one lady that came in that was actually very excited that she had gotten ‘the letter.’ Very unusual for sure. She had been in several months ago and had begun working on her resume etc. because she knew that the company was not doing well and she didn’t like where she was at. She has a couple of months and a severance package after that so I guess she’s relieved that the inevitable happened and she can really focus on getting a new job now.

Roberto was in yesterday, he is a regular for almost a year now. He is homeless but lives in his truck, one of our ‘friends.’ After all this time I was finally able to get him to work on his profile at ldsjobs and get him a resume going. I ended up doing the typing but insisted he help with what into it. He has many qualifications about what he will do and what time of day he will do so I don’t know if he’ll be able to get hired. I at least feel like he has made a big step forward. He is only able to do entry level jobs so there are not that many options for him.

He kept calling me Donna so after several times I pointed to Donna T. and said that’s Donna, I’m Sister Nelson. I corrected him a couple of times but he said he liked the name Donna better. After a couple of hours he left for a break. He called back in and Sister Phelps took a phone call from Roberto for Donna, so I took the call, I reminded him that I’m Sister Nelson. The next time he called he asked for Donna Nelson. It wouldn’t be so funny if I didn’t have a sister Donna and growing up I was often called by her name.

I have mentioned before that I have worked with several people who have had criminal records. One man had gotten out of prison after 24 years. He had upheld his innocence the entire time and worked and worked to get out. He has been out for several months now but we read in this week’s paper that he had finally pled guilty to murder. Such experiences!

One day I was working with a lady who is trying to get a job as a paralegal. She has some disabilities where it is difficult for her to interact with people. She likes to do the research end of the work. I had talked with her about a few things. She seemed quite discouraged so I really tried to encourage her and did what I could to help. Shortly thereafter a man came in with whom we have been working with, especially Jack, who is an attorney. This day he came into do some volunteer work, for his Stake had the assignment for this month. I asked him if he would spend a little time with this lady and explained to him what she was qualified to do. He was so good with her, he knew the ins and outs of the business and was able to give her some good advice and direction. He knew of some websites that were helpful and before they were finished he had found a job for her to apply for. I just really felt like the Lord was watching out for her and provided someone who could give her the assistance she needed.

Our evenings this week were spent doing a variety of activities. One evening we went with Charlie and Carla Morell and the book club friends out to dinner at a little local Italian Restaurant. One of the men is battling cancer. Seven years ago they told him he would only live a year or so longer. He has something like 25 active tumors in his body. When he gets tired he’s done! We all went to pay our bills but he and his wife kind of moved up to the head of the line, all of us assuming that he needed to leave quickly; which he did pay his bill and leave quickly. However we were all surprised when we went to pay our bills that they had all been paid. Such a generous nature they have. He is also serving as the Stake Executive Secretary in the Plano Stake.

We went out to the Grapevine Mall one evening and bought the last few gifts to mail for the grandkids. We wouldn’t want them to forget us!!

One evening we had our ERC (Employment Resource Center) staff/missionary Christmas Party. This year it was held at Bishop Bott’s home. It was a very nice evening mingling and visiting with friends. They have a very nice home; it’s always nice to be in a regular home especially this time of year with Christmas decorations. We had a nice ham dinner and played a game or two. Gloria Lyle rode out with us so she wouldn’t have to fight the traffic and find the place on her own. Between 5 and 6:00 pm it gets pretty hectic out on the freeways.

We went to a Christmas Concert by ‘Evening Song.’ The director is LDS and most, if not all of the members of the choir are LDS too, but they are not a really a church choir. They gave several concerts this week but the one on Thursday evening fit into our schedule so we went to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church to hear them. It is a beautiful church, with huge high ceilings, wonderful acoustics. They have a beautiful pipe organ also. It was a very good concert, they sing a lot of a cappella music by composers that I’m familiar with.

The morning of our P-day we spent doing things around the apartment, grocery shopping etc. It was pretty low key. In the afternoon we rode out to the Gaylord Texan Resort and looked at their Christmas decorations. We did that last year too so I guess it’s a tradition now, soon to be broken. We then went to the Grapevine Downtown Historic District. We parked and walked along the street. They really decorate for Christmas. It’s like a rule that all the shops have to have outside decorations. We really had fun walking along and looking at the decorations.

Friday night we took Gloria out with us to dinner at a Mexican restaurant that she had heard about. It was yummy authentic food. Afterwards we drove to the Farmer’s Branch Historical District, the City Hall area and then to the home that has the light show synchronized to music. You tune into a radio station and listen and watch, very fun. We enjoy her company and friendship.

Jack gave the lesson in Priesthood Meeting today in the Dallas 6th Ward. I’m sure he did a great job, even though I didn’t get to hear it.

We send our love, we hope you can feel it across the many miles that separate us. We hope you have good week and are able to enjoy this holiday season of the year.

5 December 2010

5 December 2010

Another month has past already, they go by so quickly. We enjoyed the few days off at Thanksgiving time but it’s good to be back fully engaged. It’s much easier to curb our homesickness when we are busy.

We had a special treat this past week to be able to visit with Chandler Whipple. He came to Texas to pick up a piece of construction equipment for his Dad and arrived on Tuesday. We initially thought we could trade our P-day to Tuesday this week but when we got figuring it out we realized that the Phelps don’t come in until noon on Wednesday due to the fact that the storehouse is open until 8:00 pm, so they take the late shift. We were able to leave at noon when they came in and travel out to Brownwood. It took us 3 ½ hours of travel each way so we didn’t get to visit with him a real long time but it was definitely worth it to see him. We were able to spend a couple of hours with him, go out to eat together and go out to the construction site where he was picking up the equipment. Chandler is a very resourceful young man, able to deal with the problems that arose in taking care of business. We are excited for him for his mission call to New Zealand. He had a friend with him, Blake Empey, who has his mission papers in and waiting for his call. It’s great to see the missionary force continue to grow.
It was interesting that the next day I was answering phones and a man called in for assistance from Brownwood. He was surprised that I even knew where it was, let alone to have just been there the day before.
Wednesday morning I took several calls from people who were needing to hire some people in their business, along with several emails from companies that were hiring. Unfortunately all of our computers, S (shared) drive, printers and the internet went down. Even the phones worked intermittently; during a phone call you would be disconnected. This sure put a halt to much of our work. Nearly everything we do involves computers and the internet. I was not able to get back with employers or post their jobs, find candidates who were looking for those kinds of jobs etc. Several people called in needing assistance on the website and I had to take down information to get back with them later.
Wednesday evening was a web-i-nar, so Julie had to conduct it from her home.
On Thursday we took the other half of our P-day in the morning and went in to the Center about 1:00. Unfortunately the internet and S Drive were still down. Most of our work on these two days entailed cleaning and sorting our files. All of us are a lot more organized now. So it was not all bad, we usually don’t have much time for such things.
Donna T. worked tirelessly, working with the local phone/internet company and headquarters to identify and fix the problem. About 30 minutes before closing we were back on line. Unfortunately they were only able to put a band aid on it and will need more attention this week.
One of the amazing things about it all was that very few people came to the Center during that time, the Lord takes care of things and prompts people to come or not to come as needful.
So Friday and Saturday were spent getting caught back up with the contacts, employers, job seekers etc , all the work that we had to put off.
Julie’s presentation for the web-i-nar this week was about the new Church handbook. She had gone through it all and found the items that related to Stake & Ward Employment Specialists. There is a new focus and emphasis on the Ward Councils identifying the poor and needy. The Bishop, High Priests Group Leaders, Elders Quorum President and Relief Society President have responsibility and stewardship to assist those in need. They can call upon the Ward Employment Specialists to assist them as needed. I suppose the WES can educate those leaders to let them know the resources available to them. The SES are a resource to the Bishops. Indeed the new website is set up for these leaders to be able to assist and be trained in these matters.
I have been making phone calls to candidates in one of the Denton wards this past week. Fortunately I had printed a copy of these people last week that included their phone numbers. Thursday when everything was down I was able to work on these calls. Quite a few people I didn’t reach and left messages but 4 or 5 I was able to speak with. One has been working for a couple of months, another starts Monday, one is considering a move to Utah (he was glad to learn how to search in other States for jobs and suggested he call the ERC there for assistance). Most were grateful for the call and the concern shown in their behalf. One shared how the Holy Ghost had helped her in making a decision. She was in the 2nd or 3rd interview stage and the company seemed really interested and she felt like she would be hired. However she kept having a feeling that they were not telling her everything, that they were with holding information from her. So she said the interview changed direction and she was actually interviewing them about the job. Finally they admitted that they were involved in handling financial accounts for people who were involved with pornography and that most of the computers had this kind of material up on them everyday, all day and that the language was very objectionable. She was so grateful that she had listened to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and didn’t take the job. She probably would have had to quit after a few weeks and that can be as bad or worse on your resume as not working at all.
I appreciate when people will open up and share the things that are going on in their lives. It makes me feel like we are really helping others as opposed to an abrupt, “I’m okay.” Also as they share what is going on, you can often give them a suggestion or share an article that might be helpful to them.
That happened yesterday when a couple came into the store house for an order but then came to visit us. At first the lady was very abrupt and all she wanted to do was talk with Donna T., which is of course a great idea. However Donna was busy so I finally got her talking about her situation. We were able to work together for about 40 minutes, by that time Donna was free and she was able to finish up with a few other thoughts for her.
A man was in who is looking for a teaching job. This year, as in most places, it has been hard for teachers to find positions, most have to spend some time substituting first, which he was doing and really enjoying. He loved being in the classroom and was so excited as he told us about it. The interesting thing about him is that school has not come easy for him. When he was young his teachers told him that he would never graduate from High School, he proved them wrong. He went on to college, again it was a struggle and many said he would never make it, he proved them all wrong. He graduated from Chiropractic School. This is a difficult place to make a go of it as a chiropractor because of the school here (Timmy McCauley is going to that school, too). So he went back to school and got a second degree as a teacher. He has worked so hard and accomplished so much.
Many of the Stakes here in this area have Nativity displays. They really go all out and the entire cultural hall is decorated with hundreds of nativities displayed. Most of them have live music throughout the evenings, which are usually 2 or 3 days long. They are very nice and have a very reverent feeling there.
They cancelled Young Men and Young Women’s this past week in the Carrollton Stake because they were setting up. That really affects our attendance to piano class, in fact we had to go to different room because all of the rooms were being used in one way or another. Sister Hernandez and Farrah were both there however, they are both so faithful. (I got an email a couple of days ago asking if I wanted the music books in English or Spanish, so I’m hopeful that the grant application is going through. The answer is one of each.) I won’t be to class next week so I wanted to ask Sister Hernandez if she would help teach or listen to the other students. Her son said no way would she do that, again I had to convince him to please just ask her. She very willingly said that she would help AND she said she would play postlude music for Relief Society this Sunday/today. I hope she had a positive experience.
We get to know several of the young missionaries who serve next door at the storehouse as service missionaries. For one reason or another they are unable to serve a full time mission. Once such missionary that we enjoy is James. Each Saturday he comes over to the Employment side and gets out the markers and makes his name tag. Every week is different but always creative and very colorful. He makes it unique to the season or things that he likes or something going on in the community. He then proudly shows each one of us. We look forward to this every week. Occasionally he has to miss a week and we always notice his absence.
I’ve had a little time to do some indexing lately, not a lot but 30 minutes here and there. They have had records from Texas so I always chose those, I feel like I’m still serving the people of Texas, just in a different way when I do this work.
There are many differences in our mission as compared to other missionary work. Often missionary work involves working with people who are not members but ours is unique in that we primarily serve members of the church. It’s nice to know that there are so many wonderful programs to bless our lives, including members. We do serve quite a few friends of the church but interestingly enough when our report goes to Salt Lake they only count those that are members, in our total numbers of people who have obtained jobs. Another thing that I find interesting is when we talk to people, if they find a job many of them say, ‘but I didn’t find it from ldsjobs.org.’ But the presiding Bishopric is not so much interested in WHERE they found the job but that they did find a job and that people’s lives are being blessed and they are able to be self-reliant. Also, we hope that through the job seeking skills they have learned or that someone has assisted them with, they have been able to find that next opportunity for work.
Well that’s been the work of the week. We’ve been able to do some interesting other things also this week in the evening. One evening we practiced with Charlie and the Byners. Carla is always so kind to invite us over early and share a dinner with us, the fact that she is a great cook is wonderful too. Friday and Saturday evening our little group played for an hour at the Nativity displays. Friday night we played in the Melissa Ward and Saturday we played in the Allen Stake. Friday evening President Packer, the temple president was there, and Jack had a nice visit with him. Charlie takes his harpsichord along so he is always glad to have Jack help him with the move.
Thursday evening we went to a Christmas concert at the Eismann Center of the ‘Vocal Majority.’ They are a group of 130 men that get together to sing because they love to. They have been singing for about 30 years and have sung around the world, won contests and have even sung with the MTAB Choir. I had heard of them before while in Logandale, they make CD’s etc., but it wasn’t until a couple of months ago that a volunteer came into the Center did I find out that they were located in Dallas area. Jack was helping him and he mentioned that he had been a part of the group. The internet is so great to be able to find out information.
For my scripture study right now I’m reading the Harmony of the Gospels as found in the Bible Dictionary. I decided it would be a good thing to ready for December. I’m really enjoying it and learning much. I’m also referencing the topics in Jesus the Christ. I’m so grateful for my testimony of Jesus Christ and for his life and mission. I know that just to learn about him is not enough but I have to try to be like him also. I’m grateful for this opportunity we have to serve a mission, which is an opportunity to serve others and help his work come to pass. Of course we can do that where ever we are but this indeed gives us some unique opportunities.
Jack has not been feeling good for a couple of days now. He had to leave the Center yesterday morning and we cut our church mtgs short today. He is doing better than he was but still not up to par. I guess he’s got some kind of flu. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
I thought this might be a shorter letter today, but it’s actually longer than usual. These are some of the events, people and experiences that we will want to reflect back on in the years ahead. Truly the Lord is blessing us, we are grateful for this time. We love you dearly, we miss you, our family and friends terribly some days. We are so thankful for your prayers and support. We love and pray for you daily too.
