Nacogdoches - Stephen F. Austin State University

Sister Nelson working the Career Fair that the BYU Management Society hosts every year. It was a large event, lots of hard work, but well attended with lots of networking opportunities.
We had a great time working the Career Fair and met lots of wonderful people.
For our Thursday P-day we decided to head out to East Texas.
Our First stop in East Texas was the Oil town of Kilgore.

Kilgore Tx is where Oil was first discovered in Texas. They have left the old oil derrick as part of the East Texas Oil Museum.
Then on to Nacogdoches and Stephen F Austin University

The city has been under more flags than the state of Texas, claiming nine flags. In addition to the Six Flags of Texas, it also flew under these flags: The Magee-Gutierrez Republic, The Long Republic, and The Fredonia Republic. People from the United States began to settle in Nacogdoches in 1820 and Texas' first newspaper was published there.

The Student Center

On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry, depositing debris across Texas. Much of the debris landed in Nacogdoches and much of the media coverage of the disaster focused on Nacogdoches.

Part of the walking tour we saw the jugs for the cane syrup
We took a walking tour of the Historical downtown. An early house with a spinning wheel.A garden that included sugar cane. They grow allot of sugar cane in East Texas. They celebrate with the Syrup Festival each year at this time.
The hay hooks
The lady that took us on the tour was a history major working on a Master at SFA University. Thomas Rusk was one of the most prominent early Nacogdoches Anglo settlers. A veteran of the Texas Revolution, hero of San Jacinto, he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and was secretary of war during the Republic of Texas
Nacogdoches is a sister city of Natchitoches, Louisiana. What an interesting visit~
